Karlovy Vary

The most famous and biggest spa in the Czech Republic is Karlovy Vary, founded around 1350 by the Holy Roman Emperor and Czech king Charles IV. Much of today's was built in the 19th century, in the historicist or early Art Nouveau style.  It acquired international fame thanks to its health-giving, of which there around a hundred, going down to various depths.   Today water from twelve of these springs is drunk in the treatment of various ailments.  The water serves mainly to treat metabolism-related illnesses. The town's tradition of manufacturing crystal and porcelain, and of hosting various festivals and concerts is an apt complement to its life as a spa.  And has a further claim to fame.  For the last two centuries it has been inseparably linked with the production of a world-famous herbal liqueur, and it also has a tradition of producing mineral water. The most interesting sites in include the Orthodox church of St Peter and Paul, the Town Theatre, the Mill Colonnade and the church of St Maria Magdalene.
