Christmas tree

The Christmas tree did not make it to the Czech lands before the 19th century. At first, people used to hang it from the ceiling top down and decorate it with apples, dried fruit, cookies, lumps of sugar wrapped in coloured paper, nuts and paper chains. Later, people started to make decorations of straw, wood and other available materials. Nowadays, the most common are blown glass decorations, but an increasing number of Czech families prefer the "old" way of decorating the tree. The tree is usually decorated on December 24th. After the dinner, they sit round the tree, sing carols and distribute presents that children believe the Baby Jesus left beneath its branches.
