Nativity scenes

The first Czech nativity scene was presented to the public by the Jesuits in 1560 in their St. Clement's Church near the Charles Bridge in Prague. Other churches and monasteries started to copy it and eventually the tradition found its way to ordinary households. People soon started adding their own figures to the basic scene with the newborn Christ in the crib, the Virgin Mary, Joseph, an ox and a donkey, shepherds with their flocks, and the Three Wise Men. Nativity scenes were traditionally made of various materials, such as hand-painted paper, carved from wood or modelled from other suitable materials.
