Nutshell ships

Making little ships from walnut shells is a widespread Christmas Eve custom in the Czech Republic. Every member of the family makes a ship from a half of walnut shell and a little piece of candle and puts the ship in a bowl with water. Everyone then guesses their fortunes from the movement of the ships. If a ship sails across the bowl, the person will live long. If the candle goes off or the ship sinks, its owner will have bad luck. Another variant says that if the ship sails to the middle of the bowl, that person will leave the house soon. If it stays at the brim, its owner will stay.
